All about Fart
FACTS: Let’s clear the air. This gassy plush is inspired by one of humanity’s oldest and funniest bodily functions: the fart. The word “fart” comes from the Old English feortan, related to the Latin pedere, meaning "to break wind." It even crops up in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, where the Porter jokes about farts and flatulence. It's a universal truth: everyone does it. From mice to mammoths, flatulence is a fact of life.
But what is a fart, exactly? It’s mostly nitrogen and oxygen from swallowed air, mixed with gases like hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane produced by bacteria in your colon. These helpful microbes are hard at work fermenting the undigested leftovers of your lunch. Fiber, sugars and starches get broken down, releasing gas as a byproduct. Some people’s bacteria produce more methane, which is flammable. So maybe skip breaking wind near an open flame!
And that signature smell? That’s courtesy of tiny amounts of sulfur-containing compounds like hydrogen sulfide and methanethiol. Even though they make up less than 1% of a toot’s volume, their stinky power is mighty. Diet plays a big role too. Beans, onions, cabbage, eggs and dairy can fuel especially fragrant emissions.
On average humans pass gas 10 to 20 times a day. It’s totally normal, often healthy and sometimes hilarious. Whether you call it a toot, poot, fart, flatulence, crop dusting or a backdoor breeze, it’s a cheeky reminder that science doesn’t always smell like roses. But hey, at least it’s full of surprises and endlessly fascinating. So own your emissions and let curiosity rip with a blast of fun that’ll clear the room!
