Four decades ago, the U.S. surgeon "closed the door on infectious diseases". Why the confidence? With the advent of discovering the first safe anti-microbial drug -- antibiotics, thought to "revolutionize medicine", this new powerful was supposed to combat disease-causing microbes, be they viruses, bacteria, fungi, or tiny parasites. So some felt that such diseases might be eliminated altogether. The result? Widespread overconfidence. Where are we now? Resilient germs rebound. It's a major, widespread problem.

Default Solders returning from Iraq.

To treat soldiers returning from Iraq with wound infections caused by Acinetobacter baumannii, doctors are resorting to using a drug called Colistin. The medicine fell out of use decades ago because it can cause severe damage to the kidneys. The authors of the IDSA report noted that Acinetobacter can also cause pneumonia; mortality rates for the pneumonia can be 20% or more.

Antimicrobial resistance is a major concern, however not all of that information is correct. It is only recently that there are any medications that combat viral infections (though they mostly only control/slow said infections and do not cure them), most treatments are against bacteria, some are against fungi and protists. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics is a major reason for the resistance problems we have today. Many antimicrobials have side effects, especially the ones against fungi and protists.
