could someone tell me what the best subject to start on microbiology would be?

My classes usually start with a "What are microbes" lecture, except at the graduate level where they figure we should know by now.

Best to start with the basics and then work up to advanced. I learned about their size, shapes, physical characteristics, different kinds and environments and so on. Some of it depends on what you are interested in as it is actually a very broad field, from pathogens to probiotics, arctic to the deep thermal vents...
