i just heard that there is a form of BSE that infects cats.

There are forms of prion diseases that affect most mammals. In deer and elk its called Chronic Wasting Disease....be careful if you hunt! Predatory animals like cats are probably more susceptible because they eat other animals that might themselves have prion diseases.
