View Full Version : Microbe Christmas Ornaments!

Hi there! Now, a few of us at this forum have been discussing the idea (brilliantly thought up buy moi) of Microbes christmas ornaments. They would basically be little pvc figurines with loops attached to the tops for all your tree hanging needs. There was a thought of them having a little santa hat on, too. So, pick wether you would like to see ornaments or not, and wether you would like them to have santa hats or not. I was thinking they could come singularly, in packs of the categories (e.g, health, maladies), or in a box of all the microbes. Pick one of these options, too! We thought a poll would be a good idea, so we could show the results in an e-mail to the company to show that there is interest in the idea! We'd like to have them available this coming christmas, so cast your votes now! You should have picked three choices in the end, by the way, unless you select "no", then you need only pick no! Voting is a huge help, and remember, if there is lots of interest to show when the e-mail is sent, we could have germ-infested trees for (hopefully) christmas 2006!

Please no Santa Hats. I'm Jewish and would use them for my Hanukah bush, and would rather have it more secular for that matter.

Yeah, I realized that after I made the poll. It would not be fair to poeple from other religions if we used a christian Icon, also they look more like microbes without hats! Thanks for voting!

I would not mind too much if they had santa hats, though I would prefer if it were an option, I would possibly get both sets but would probably like the ones without the hats better, especially since then they could be used for other things besides Christmas ornaments then... I've never heard of a Hanukah bush, cool!

I'm dreaming of a microbial Christmas, just have to have ornaments to make it so...

May all your cultures grow right and may all your inoculated potatoes have blight

Ummmmm...that made no sense...

I mean, the first part did, but the second part was weird. It made sense, it was just weird...

Potato blight, it is a fungal infection of potatoes, caused massive problems in Ireland where potatoes are a staple diet. I added the innoculated because I would not wish for someone that does not want it to have it considering how many people starved because of it. Only went with blight because it rhymed with right.

Giardia

yes, I learned about potato blight. It was just a weird line...

I can write under pressure, only way I can get an assignment done, but only enjoy writing when I am doing it on my own free will.

I don't think I am capable of writing a long story, I'd run out of ideas and such. It'll be hard enough writing my dissertation thing!

i think this would be an awesome idea. last year for christmas i took all my microbes and put them up on the tree X) my mom wasn't too happy that we had ebola instead of a christmas angel, but it was so cute ^_^

I like tartar sauce.

kskerr
06-19-2006, 03:15 AM
I make my own, momma used to make it with pickle relish and then I discovered using carmelised onions instead and when I finally got her to try it she converted. Bonus is then it can be used on sandwiches when the fish are done (we only serve it with breaded fish too).

Giardia

I commit the crime of buying the Kraft kind...relish, mayo, and preservatives:D .

kskerr
06-21-2006, 02:40 AM
We were always too cheap to buy it premade, plus since we only used it on breaded fish/fish sticks it was better to just make what we needed at the time, not a meal we had too often so no need to have a ton of the sauce around...

Giardia
07-02-2006, 11:52 AM
I like it on fish sticks and fish and chips...and french fries...

kskerr
07-19-2006, 02:33 AM
Actually I am not a huge turkey fan, well I like turkey deli meat, so it would not be so bad as long as no one ate it... I can take turkey as long as I do not have to eat the leftovers, I am not a left over turkey person, I like it fresh cooked, and I like chicken way better either way.

Giardia
07-31-2006, 10:42 AM
by brother is allergic to turkey...only roasted, he eats the deli meat. Instead, he has a gigantic plate of stuffing.

kskerr
08-04-2006, 12:57 AM
Hmmm, I think mayhap your brother is just picky or allergic to a seasoning on the roast turkey given that deli turkey is turkey (well most deli turkey is, there is a kind my mom gets that does not list turkey as an ingrediant !)...

for no reason, we had like a mini thanksgiving dinner in last night. Even though it's the beginning of september, we had a roast chicken, stuffing, potatoes, and apple pie. All the food that went into it was local, and the apples in the pie came off our trees!

Doesn't Canada celebrate Thanksgiving on a different day than the US? Sounds like a very good dinner, cool about the apples, though I think apple pie is icky (not much of a pie person in general), if it were our family doing it Mom would save me an apple to munch while everyone else ate the pie :).

Stomach ache is one of my favorites. Giardia and I are mostly interested in soccer fever because we are collectors and it eats at us not having them all... Otherwise it is rather lame!

It's all the little hairs that line the exterior of a cell, like all the little yellow things on Stomach ache.

A Flagellum is the whip-like tail found on sperm.

Like the one on sperm... They are made and work completely different even though they look alike ;) :p. Cillia are like hair, microscopic hair, that some cells have, we have cilliated cells in our body actually, in our intestines and in our respiratory tract. The ones in the intestines are for nutrient absorbtion and the ones in the lungs are to help move the mucus up so the nasty stuff trapped in it is no longer in the lungs. Microbes that have them use them for movement.

mazuac
09-19-2006, 04:17 PM
so the stomache ache uses them to moves around? than what does flagella do?

That bug does not have flagella, ones that do use them for movement, some also use them for attatchment.

It will wrap its flagellum around something to anchor itself there; Sort of like how a seahorse holds onto coral with it's tail.

It is more that it touches and sticks than it wraps it around.

kskerr
09-19-2006, 10:38 PM
and then what???

Depends on the bug, one I recently learned of will do that and then permanently attach to the surface and then grow and form what is called a biofilm, this is a clump of cells that often interact and work together, not too much is known about them yet, it is the new sexy thing in microbiology right now. They can be a benefit or cause some problems, especially when they grow on medical implants and such, they are very hard to get rid of and some diseases can make them.

A biofilm? I don't see why not, some of them form rather cool structures. Or perhaps a set that have velcro on them so you can form your own structures, that would be cool!
