View Full Version : Do you name your microbes?

Askor
02-28-2006, 04:30 PM
Well, yes, but when I get the ulcer cell I'm going to name it Willyum, (that is actually how it will be spelled :D (someone I once knew thought that was how my name was spelled)) because it had been infecting me. :(

Giardia
02-28-2006, 07:07 PM
I don't, but my mom does for fun. She called my salmonella Flagella Salmonella, and E.coli Edward Coli.:D

Shark's Protein

I have hard times thinking of names, but these are what I call some:

Flu = Flubie (Just sounds cute)
Ulcer = Ulsera (a dislexic spelling of Ursela)
Athlete's Foot = Cletes (Like the football shoes)

kskerr
03-04-2006, 03:34 PM
They already have names...

GERMan
03-28-2006, 02:35 PM
They just have their normal names like "Flu", "Yeast" etc., but a friend of mine calls hers "Hefe-Bobbel" (Little Yeast Ball), which is not African but Swabian.

Giardia
04-17-2006, 06:48 PM
I sometimes call them by the scientific name, sometimes by the common name. Still, I only go by the card.

Crazy4Microbes
04-17-2006, 07:33 PM
I named all of my microbes. I have 12 and it would probably take me forever to post all there names. Oh well.

kskerr
04-17-2006, 08:50 PM
Post them anyway, I am curious :)!

Giardia

Oh alright. It's worth it.

Ulcer-Braidy (I love to braid it's long orange "hair" thus the name Braidy.)
Cough-Twinkie (If you look at it with it's eyes facing down you'll see why.)
Common cold-Rhino (Think rhinovirus.)
Mad cow-Moo (I'm not even going to explain that one.)
Sleeping sickness-Lullabye (When you think of sleeping sickness you think of sleep and lullabyes are sleep related.)
Ebola-Squirmy (It's one big squirmy mess)
Stomach Ache-Queasy (When you get a stomach ache you feel queasy.)
Dust Mite-Rags(Look at a dust mite under a microscope. It should look like it has a rag draped over it)
Plaugue- Medival (Some of the times black Death was spreading around was the medival times.)
Sore Throat-Strep (You all know this one.)

Note:These two are open for suggestions,

Ear ache- Orange ( Couldn't think of any thing else.)

Flesh eating- Hungrey (Boring!)

Crazy4Microbes
04-18-2006, 03:55 PM
Whoa. Look how long that is.

Giardia
04-18-2006, 07:45 PM
Nice names! It will take a while to think of good ones for ear ache and flesh eating...hold that thought.

kskerr
04-19-2006, 03:04 AM
How about waxy for ear ache and hannible for flesh eating? That was not too long, I have put out way longer posts than that!!!!

Crazy4Microbes

Hey kskerr, you changed your avatar (sorry, that was a bit off-topic)!

kskerr
04-19-2006, 07:57 PM
Why yes I did, wanted to spice things up a little. I am toying with the idea of using the one my sister made me for another site, it is cute and quite appropriate for this one.

Giardia
04-20-2006, 10:19 PM
What you get for using a microbe name for your user name: The same old avatar, or it looks weird.:D

kskerr
04-21-2006, 02:25 AM
Oh go ahead and change it if you want, who cares as long as you are happy!!!

Giardia
04-21-2006, 11:57 AM
Hmmmm, I'll have to think...

kskerr
04-22-2006, 03:13 AM
So my friend is here visiting me this weekend, very awesome, and he has never seen the microbes before, he gave me a rather funny look when he did. He has decided to give them all names based on what they look like. So far Martian Life is named Mr. Hanky, E. coli is a jelly fish, and syphilis is a snake... Can't remember what giardia was, he did mention that one too, I'll have to ask him in the morning since it is real late and he just went to bed...

Giardia
04-22-2006, 11:05 AM
I think giardia looks more like a jelly fish than E.coli.:D :D :D :D

kskerr
04-24-2006, 10:43 PM
Well we spent pretty much all day Sat on campus at the ISU Veishea celebration (yeah no rioting or stabbings this year, way go Iowans/undergrads!!!) and he left Sun so he did not give them all names. Oh well there is always next time!

kskerr
04-24-2006, 10:43 PM
I think they both look like jelly fish a little :)

Giardia
04-25-2006, 05:40 PM
E.coli looks more like a football!:D

kskerr
04-26-2006, 10:46 PM
It does look a little like a football, or rugby, though it is a little narrow for a rugby...

Giardia
04-28-2006, 10:19 PM
OOOH! It looks like a sprouting potato!

kskerr
04-29-2006, 12:35 PM
A little yeah :D

Giardia
04-30-2006, 03:22 PM
How come we're always waaaaaaaay off topic??

kskerr
04-30-2006, 07:01 PM
Perhaps we are a little nutty, but then we are not too far off topic in this one, what they look like is kinda related to what we would potentially name them...

Giardia
05-01-2006, 11:06 PM
I suppose you're right...

kskerr
05-01-2006, 11:51 PM
Of course I am, I'm a professional ;) :D!

Giardia
05-02-2006, 11:17 PM

kskerr
05-03-2006, 12:19 AM
I have the lab coat, goggles, full set of microbes, and giantmicrobes hat to prove it :D

Norby
05-04-2006, 08:12 PM
I named them all:
Germy (Sore throat) , Bad Breathy , Ulcerey
Yeasty , Fungo (Athlete's Foot), Coldy
Marsy , Fluey , Stomach Achey
The Giant Macrobes just get called Bookworm et al.

kskerr
05-04-2006, 08:38 PM
That would be what my mother would name them, except she would likely pronounce them wrong. It took me several months to get her pronouncing "microbe" right (She used to say microby, it was annoying).

Giardia
05-04-2006, 11:13 PM
all you did was add "Y" to the end...

kskerr
05-05-2006, 12:59 AM
The adding a Y thing is quite common...

Giardia
05-28-2006, 02:17 PM
yes, it is

kskerr
05-31-2006, 04:09 PM
My mom did it to many things when we were little, then she finally started to break the habit a few years ago and my sister had a baby so it is coming back, dang!

Giardia
06-03-2006, 06:08 PM
well, that sucks

kskerr
06-04-2006, 09:48 AM
I know! We are harrassing her and so she does not do it nearly as much as she did before so at least we have that...

Giardia
06-04-2006, 11:34 AM
that's good:D

kskerr
06-04-2006, 10:51 PM
Now we just have to try to prevent her from making my niece scared of bees, my mom is nutty about them and Kayla likes to immitate people. The other day niece told me there were bees above her, they were just flies or something, it was just like how Mom figures whatever it is is a bee if she hears buzzing and can't see it, even if it is March and just a stupid asian beetle (Iowa is infested with asian beetles and she was visiting me and one was in my curtains and she would not believe me that it was a beetle...)

Giardia
06-04-2006, 11:28 PM
lol, people are so afraid of bees. And spiders. But spiders have eight legs and webs. Bees...buzz.

kskerr
06-04-2006, 11:39 PM
I think both are cool. I take pics of bees and wasps and send them to her, I sent a whole series of them a couple days ago, first I sent a wasp pic, then I sent a pic of a bumble bee and titled the e-mail "not a wasp", then I sent a pic of a honey bee and put "Not as wasp, nor a bumble bee" then I sent a pic of my sister...

Giardia
06-07-2006, 04:51 PM
When people see spiders, they all want to kill them! I just catch them in a glass and put them outside, after all, would you like someone stepping on YOU?

kskerr
06-08-2006, 11:54 PM
When I see spiders in my apartment I let them be, figure they are eating bugs, rather have a spider in the corner than bugs flying about, especially mosquitos, hate them!

kskerr
06-08-2006, 11:55 PM
Plus I think spiders are quite cool looking :)

Giardia
06-20-2006, 11:09 PM
They're just doing their jobs! You give them a warm place to live, they give you a fly-free anvironment!

kskerr
06-21-2006, 02:57 AM
I always had to catch the flies for them, but then I was being a bit impatient to see them do their thing, they might not have needed that much help...

Giardia
07-02-2006, 11:44 AM
spiders like to catch things on their own...they're independant hunters!

kskerr
07-05-2006, 12:30 AM
I also wanted to watch them eat it, defeats the purpose if I cannot see them do their thing!

Giardia
07-31-2006, 10:52 AM
I've watched them billions of times! they like to spin webs outside my window, and i sit there for hours watching them catch and eat flies...they stun the bug, roll it up, and either leave it for later, or stick their fangs into it and suck out its juices. let's hope you aren't eating while you read this...

kskerr
08-04-2006, 01:06 AM
I like spiders, I usually let them be when they are in my apartment, they eat things like mosquittos, much rather have a spider in the room!

Giardia
09-10-2006, 11:11 AM
i don't really like the big hairy ones that run across the floor...we catch them in a glass and put them outside, but we never kill them!

mazuac

Falgella? okay, i like that name! hey, i am wriitng a story A Million Tiny Microbes, be sure to check it out!

kskerr
09-12-2006, 11:52 PM
I am guessing that is a typo, it is spelled flagella (plural of flagellum), the whip-like appendages on some bacteria cells that gives them the ability to swim, made up of a protein called flagellin. That is what the strings on E. coli, Ulcer, and Salmonella are.

mazuac
09-13-2006, 03:07 PM
koolio, well, i traded my sister my old stuffy octupuss for her stomach ache, and named it Shigoogle, here r some names i have...

yeast = Sir Yeast-O-Lot, Sir Yeasty, Yeasty
Martian = Marty or martian (mar-tee-in)
Stomach Ache = Shigoogle, shigoo (shi-goo) (as in Shigella (the name))
Salmanolla = Bobble ( i like that name)
Giardia = Jeranimo

I alternate between being too subtle and not subtle enough, there is a fine line sometimes. If it is important then I go with direct, if I am playing then I tend to do subtle. Depends a lot on my mood too.

Then you get to grad school and learn that you need to try to cram a text book's worth of information into 2 pages and then summerise that into 200 words! It is so evil and wrong that all though our education they teach that more is better, I would write a two page paper that would contain all the information in someone else's 5 page paper and I would get a lower grade, so I learn to do the 5 page version and now they want it down to 1 only! I am not looking forward to when I have to write my first article for publication! Most scientific journals charge by the page so you have to try to get as few pages as possible but still give enough information.

When and where was the second, the article I read today was still at 1? The number of cases of kidney failure on this one seems very high, I had thought it was a bit more rare a symptom. Actually, I've been thinking that I will re-name Microbes that don't have a "set" name yet, after Latin terms, or alternatives of their scientific names~!

What about Le Mal aux Oreilles for Ear Ache?

Stomach Ache*Special
10-10-2008, 08:43 PM
It's French! At first I thought that it meant Bad Breath in French, but then I realized that it was meant for Ear Ache! Hah! The word for Ear is a little different than that from the Spanish way to say Ear. Ear in Spanish is "Oreja" (O-re-ha);) It's a little similar to Oreilles in French, but I don't exactly see it as a cognate... -_-

Or Ear Ache could be Dolor de Oidos! And Flesh Eating could be Devoradora de Carne!;)

Gangrene...oh no!

Lol.My microbes have hilarious names, like Gangrene's is Super Bacteria of The Clostridium Family that Causes Advanced Tissue Death. (SBCFCATD)for short!

I named all of my microbes. I have 12 and it would probably take me forever to post all there names. Oh well.

I have 30-40, It would take ME forever to put all their names. I sometimes invent random nick-names, but I always use a different one. Sometimes I just Call `em by their real name.

Yea! I thought I was the only one who did that. Strep and Ear-ache even had a child. It's Pimple. Sometimes I even play school with them! Wow that sounds really childish now but it's fun. I also bring them places and take pictures. I'll have to put them on here but I can't figure out how. By the way I'm new on here (can you tell) but have been collecting for 2 years.:)
